Seeking to expand his knowledge of construction, Mike moved to northern Utah at eighteen to pursue hands-on experience in custom home building. There, he worked as a carpenter and learned every stage of the building process, including foundation forming, rough framing, roofing, window and door installation, and finish millwork. During this time, he also attended Utah Valley State University during evening classes after work studying Environmental Engineering. While he enjoyed the academic challenge, he ultimately discovered that his true calling was not behind a desk, but on a jobsite helping families bring their dream homes to life.
At twenty-four, Mike earned his contractor’s license and was entrusted with his first custom home, a 3,700-square-foot residence on a five-acre ranchette in Southern Utah. Watching his clients settle into a home created specifically for the way they wanted to live confirmed what he had already begun to realize: building custom homes is as much about people as it is construction.
After returning to California in 2004 to be closer to family in the Sierra Nevada foothills, Mike obtained his California contractor’s license and founded Sherman Homes, incorporated in 2012 — today Sherman Custom Homes Inc. Over the past two decades he has led the construction of more than eighty custom homes here in the foothills — on top of the 300-plus homes he has built or supervised across his career — each one tailored to the unique needs, lifestyle, and vision of its owners.
What continues to inspire Mike today is the same thing that drew him to the profession decades ago: the opportunity to help families create a place where life’s most meaningful moments will unfold. He believes a well-built home should provide beauty, comfort, and lasting value for generations, and that philosophy continues to guide every project Sherman Homes undertakes.
“Our mission is to turn our clients’ dreams into beautiful, efficient, and modern homes that they love.”
