We want everyone who visits shermanhomesinc.com — including people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification, or reduced-motion settings — to be able to learn about our homes and get in touch with us. Accessibility is part of how we build this site, not an afterthought.
Our standard
We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, the standard referenced by the U.S. Department of Justice for ADA website accessibility and by California's Unruh Civil Rights Act case law.
What we have done
- Every page has a "Skip to content" link, a single descriptive heading structure, and can be navigated by keyboard alone.
- All photographs of our homes carry written descriptions (alt text); decorative images are hidden from assistive technology.
- Videos have visible pause controls, never autoplay with sound, and respect your device's "reduce motion" setting.
- Form fields have labels, required fields are marked, and error states are announced.
- Text can be resized to 200% without loss of content, and the layout works on phones, tablets, and desktops.
- We test with keyboard navigation, browser zoom, and screen-reader spot checks before we publish new pages.
Known limitations
We are still working on a few things and would rather tell you than pretend otherwise:
- Some gold section labels on light backgrounds do not yet meet the 4.5:1 contrast ratio. A darker gold is being rolled out.
- Our client testimonial videos and the "A Sherman Home Story" video do not have captions or transcripts yet. A short written quote from each client appears next to their video, but it is an excerpt, not the full conversation. If you would like the content of any video in writing, contact us and we will send it.
- The video tours in our gallery have no narration (two carry a music soundtrack, off by default); the written project description on each page covers the same information.
- Older articles migrated from our previous website may contain images with generic descriptions. We are rewriting them.

When you write, it helps to include the page address, what you were trying to do, and the browser or assistive technology you were using. We aim to respond within two business days and to fix genuine barriers, not just acknowledge them.
Technical information
This site is built as static HTML with CSS and minimal JavaScript, hosted on Cloudflare. It relies on standard HTML semantics rather than an accessibility overlay or widget, because overlays do not fix underlying barriers and can interfere with assistive technology.
